The Oregon Ducks finished the 2009-10 season with a 10-3 College Football Picks record and won the PAC 10 conference but lost their BCS Rose bowl appearance 26-17 to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
The Oregon program had it's share of off the field problems in the off season and one of those proved crucial for their most recognized player. Quarterback Jerimiah Massoli pleaded guilty to burglary charges in March and head coach Chip Kelly suspended his for the 2010 season. The punishment fit the crime in this case, the Oregon program has been under the microscope due to the National Television incident last year when running back LaGarrette Blount punched a Boise State player after after the teams 19-8 season opening loss. The 2010 Ducks will be quarterbacked by senior Nate Costa, who once beat out Massoli for the job, the team also returns LaMichael James who rushed for 1,546 yards as a red shirt freshman last year, in addition the team returns the leading receiver and the entire offensive line that averaged over 36 points per game. That is impressive, this team will definitely put up some point this year.
The Ducks return 8 starter on defense to a unit that ranked 35th with over 336 total yards per game given up. The team gave up over 205 yard per game through the air and opponents scored and average of 23.8 per game. With all of the experience coming back this year coach Kelly thinks the statistics will dramatically improve. Defensive end Kenny Rowe had 11' sacks last year and defensive tackle Brandon Bair is the emotional leader of the line. The strength of the defense are the linebackers, all 3 return and they are led by senior Casey Matthews, if the last name sounds familiar, it should he is the son of former NFL star clay Matthews, brother of Clay Matthews Jr. Who played at USC and his uncle is hall of fame offensive tackle Bruce Matthews. The secondary allowed 18 touchdowns last year but that is a deceiving number, most teams were playing catch up with Oregon. The defensive backfield is deep and no player is assured a starting job, the coaching staff is excited about this bunch, they could easily have 4 player that could play at the next level. This sports handicapper has Oregon winning the PAC 10 going away but road trip to Tennessee, USC, Cal and the last game of the season is going to be at Oregon State in the Civil war.
